Troopergate

I got a request to give some background on the Troopergate “scandal” involving Governor Palin.  Here’s a lengthy article from the Anchorage Daily News.  And here’s a blog post from Flopping Aces with lots of juicy details.

For those who have better things to do, here’s the short of it: prior to becoming Governor, Palin file complaints about her brother-in-law (Wooten), a cop,  for making threats about her father, tasing his step-son, illegally killing a moose, etc.  After an investigation Wooten was suspended for 10 days, which was later reduced to 5 days because of union pressure.  The Public Safety Commissioner alleges that he was fired because he would not fire Wooten, although he admits that he was never directly asked to fire him.  Palin insists he was fired for performance issues.  Even if true, it’s hard to see what the scandal is.  A cop tasers his step-son, threatens his father-in-law and is suspended for five days?  Would that make you feel safe?  The Public Safety Commissioner had his job for two years before being fired–if she were going to fire him for this, it seems likely she would have done it sooner than that.

And this is newsworthy, but Obama’s working relationship with an unrepentant terrorist isn’t?
